Why a SCAR 20S?
Aside from the SCAR’s style and prevalence in SOCOM, there’s a good reason for the SCAR 20S in this giveaway.
In the American Revolution, militiamen relied on marksmanship skills to give them an advantage against the better-equipped British military. Though their muskets were inaccurate by modern standards, Americans made the most of their equipment to outrange and outmaneuver their opposition.
This same strategy has been carried into modern times with the advent of Designated Marksmen Rifles (DMRs) and the Semi-automatic Sniper System (SASS). These weapons are accuracy-driven, semi-automatic rifles, usually chambered in a full-power rifle cartridge such as .308 Winchester or 6.5 Creedmoor. In a combat, designated marksmen and snipers use these rifles to deliver swift precision against the opposing force, just as early militia did.
The SCAR 20 is one of America’s latest additions to the marksman’s arsenal, and its effectiveness has earned it a glowing reputation. While many military firearms lose relevance in a civilian market, rifles like the SCAR 20 are even more attractive for personal ownership. Don’t believe us? Here’s five good reasons you should consider a DMR or SASS for your next rifle build.
Reason 1: Unbeatable Versatility
In general, most marksman rifles will use a full-power rifle cartridge like .308 Winchester or 6.5 Creedmoor.
.308 Winchester sees extensive use in competition, hunting, and combat alike. The wide variety of ammunition allows you to tailor the cartridge for almost any purpose. 30-caliber bullets are among the most prevalent on the market, so no matter your mission, there is a bullet made to suit it.
Many would say 6.5 Creedmoor takes all of these benefits to the next level. 6.5 Creedmoor consistently wins in precision competition, while its low recoil and flat trajectory make it a favorite among professional marksmen.
No matter what cartridge you choose for your DMR, the semi-automatic operation and high precision design will allow it to perform well in a wide variety of roles.
Reason 2: High Precision
Semi-Automatic Sniper Systems earn their name through precision.
While ‘combat accurate’ is enough for many modern rifles, designated marksman rifles and semi-automatic sniper systems demand a far stricter standard. Paired with the right ammunition, you should expect sub-MOA groupings, ensuring consistency when engaging targets at long distance.
For civilian ownership, precision is one of the most important aspects of any firearm, particularly in personal defense.
Reason 3: Wide Viable Range
Whether you’re engaging from 10 yards or 1,000 yards, a DMR is a capable choice, especially when it’s paired with high-quality optics and ammunition. While DMRs are less agile than carbines and less accurate than bolt-actions, a DMR can compete against both with compelling effectiveness.
Though the SCAR 20 is optimized for long-range, it’s still nimble enough to make quick shots against targets within 50 yards. That’s why we equipped our giveaway rifle with a GLx 4-16x50 FFP MIL-DOT riflescope. On minimum magnification, the GLx 4-16x50 is fast to bring on target, but its crystal-clear glass and patented GLx turrets make it an exceptional long-distance performer. Combined with a refined MIL-DOT reticle, this scope is an excellent general-purpose optic, earning its place in this giveaway.
To further improve long-range performance, we’ve included a Magpul bipod, helping you to stabilize for long-distance shots. We’re also using our brand-new GLx 20MOA 30mm Riflescope Mount, which makes its public debut with this giveaway. Our GLx mounts are 100% US-made with top-of-the-line hardware and craftsmanship that will ensure a reliable zero even in the harshest conditions. We’ll have a lot more details to come in the next few weeks, but rest assured: with this mount, kilometer hits are well within reach.
Reason 4: Firearm Variety
There are a LOT of viable options when building a DMR or SASS. The SCAR 20 is one of our favorite, but you also have a huge variety of alternatives.
AR10s are among the most popular, and they can be custom-built just as easily as an AR15, but you also have non-AR options. M14-style rifles like Springfield’s M1A can be built for accuracy with precision stocks and other upgrades. Even traditional battle rifles like the HK G3 (or HK91, PTR91, or C91) can be configured to meet the accuracy demands of a designated marksman rifle.
Since the definition of ‘DMR’ is so loose, even AR15s can be configured to fit a DMR role. This is best exemplified with rifles like the Mk12, which filled a ‘DMR’ role with SOCOM until 2017. DMRs and SASS rifles are determined by their optimal application, so if you can fit a rifle to meet the high-precision demands of a designated marksman, you could have a ‘DMR’ of your own.
Reason 5: Extensive Support for Gear and Training
Since these rifles are used extensively within the military, there is a tremendous market for gear, parts, and training.
AR10s have the best product support of any .308 in the market, but alternative rifles like the SCAR get plenty of options as well. All the essential furniture can be replaced with aftermarket options to tailor the rifle to your tastes. The SCAR 20s comes with an enhanced Geissele Super Scar trigger, plus a full-length monolithic handguard and adjustable precision stock. These upgrades and a stellar 20in barrel make it a notable improvement over the standard SCAR 17 when pushed for precision marksmanship.
No matter what rifle you choose, the popularity of DMRs and precision shooting mean that you can always find good ammo, gear, and training to support your new loadout.
And there you have it! Five good reasons for a DMR/SASS in any arsenal. Of course, you could take home a SCAR 20S kit of your very own with this month’s giveaway.
