If you’d like to know more about how we built our PDW, just continue reading! We’ll detail all our considerations when assembling this setup, and why it’s optimal for our intended purposes.
Starting a Personal Defense Weapon Setup
Personal defense weapons, or PDWs, are an increasingly popular category within the firearms community. PDWs are compact, self-defense weapons that maximize combat effectiveness with a minimal profile. PDWs are not a new invention, as ‘machine pistols’ have been in service since the early 20th century, but modern gunfighting favors small urban combat footprint. A short carbine offers many benefits over full-sized rifles, particularly in concealment and close-quarters maneuverability, such as in home-defense or vehicle-defense.
Since PDWs are rising in popularity, you have great brands to consider when starting your kit. For our purposes, we chose the Foxtrot Mike Products Tri Lug AR Pistol with SBA3 Brace. Not only is this PCC a great value out of the box, but it includes many of the most essential features that you’d have to buy separately on other carbines. The SBA3 brace provides greater stability without compromising on size and weight, and the 7” barrel is the perfect balance of agility and ballistics for close-quarters performance. Additionally, this FM9 features an ambidextrous side-charging upper, which is a considerable benefit for use in a vehicle, where you’ll have less space to get leverage for rear-charging. Combined with Glock magazine compatibility, the FM9 combines the most attractive PDW features into an affordable package.
When outfitting your PDW, optics are a crucial consideration. In close-quarters, target acquisition speed and situational awareness are your top priorities.
For our setup, we choose our Primary Arms SLx MD-25 Microdot with a 2 MOA reticle. This durable red dot sight brings a 25mm aperture to the compact microdot footprint, giving you a larger window with reduced visual obstruction. The MD-25’s illumination features both NV-compatibility and daylight brightness, making it capable in any environment. Even so, the MD-25 has a 50,000-hour battery life, so you can leave it ‘always-on’ for emergency use.
For our PDW, we’re using a Reptilia Corp DOT Mount with a 1.93” height. Higher than lower 1/3 co-witness, 1.93” mounts are popular for their ‘heads-up’ positioning, allowing the user to quickly get behind their glass without shrugging their shoulder. This mounting height is particularly beneficial for use with gas masks or night vision, where added clearance is necessary to get clear view of the reticle.
Every defensive firearm needs illumination, and for this kit, we want both white light and IR.
We chose a SureFire KM1 M300 Vampire head with a Reptilia Corp TORCH CR123 M-LOK body for our flashlight. The TORCH body uses a highly-durable integrated M-LOK mount that places the light perfect for use with an IR aiming device. Combined with the SureFire KM1 M300 Vampire head, you can toggle between white light and IR illumination for night vision use.
If you’re wearing night vision, you’ll want an IR aiming device too. That’s why we included a Steiner DBAL-A3 dual beam aiming laser and illuminator. The DBAL-A3 is a capable IR device covering all the bases with an IR laser, IR illuminator, and slaved green-visible laser. While the DBAL stands higher than comparable PEQ devices, your 1.93 Reptilia mount will give you plenty of visibility downrange.
To complete the illumination setup, we need a control device that gives quick access to both the IR laser and weapon light. The SureFire Waterproof Dual Switch is a common choice among most professional users, respected for its low mounting height and lightweight construction. Since PDWs are innately driven by agility, the SureFire dual switch is a clear winner.
With illumination and optics established, we can complete our setup with accessories that will improve weapons manipulation in close quarters. We also need transport and protective gear, rounding out a complete kit.
With a short barrel, your forward hand will have a lot of leverage in controlling the muzzle, but we can further improve that with a handstop. While there are many great handstops on the market, the Arisaka Defense M-LOK Indexer is our top choice for its low-profile, minimalistic design.
As with any AR-style pistol or carbine, you’ll want a sling setup that’s quick to manipulate when changing stances. The Blue Force Gear Vickers 221 Sling is a community favorite for its rugged construction and intuitive quick-adjustment system. This sling can convert between 1-point and 2-point configurations, which is particularly beneficial with compact PDWs. To ensure the best placement, we also installed an Expo Arms M-LOK QD Sling Mount, which allows for proper placement of the forward QD slot in a 2-point configuration.
One of the most significant benefits of a PDW is the concealability and convenience of transport. Our FM9 is short enough to fit within an appropriate day pack, such as this Vertx Gamut Checkpoint Backpack. The Gamut is a stylish, utilitarian design that won’t draw attention in public, though it provides plenty of interior space to carry a PDW and your daily necessities. With Vertx’s quality materials and assembly, this bag can last for a long time and will keep up with you in any environment.
We recently discussed the importance of hearing protection and the value of electronic ear muffs, so the logical conclusion was to include a set of Peltor Sport Tactical 500 Electronic Hearing Protection. These over-ear hearing protectors are durable and comfortable for extended wear, bringing great sound quality and noise reduction for a more enjoyable range experience. We also included a set of Magpul Terrain Black Frame Polarized eyewear. These ballistic sunglasses are both stylish and practical, giving you plenty of visibility with ample protection.
To complete the package, we included 5x 33-round Glock 17 magazines and a spare set of SureFire CR123A batteries, so you can get the illumination up and running upon arrival. Overall, this package meets all the demands of a modern PDW, making it ideal for our ‘Stay Prepared’ giveaway.
