Space flight is an interesting endeavor. Most of us think about it in terms of spaceships and high technology. But, especially back in the days when it was done by capsule, sometimes astronauts had no idea where they might land, and were expected to be able to take care of themselves in the wilderness until a rescue could be arranged. This machete, then, was made to commemorate that era of spaceflight and is a reproduction of the machetes carried by some space capsule crewmembers in their emergency kits from the early age in spaceflight. It’s 11.75” long in terms of blade length, and is made out of high carbon steel to take an edge well when working hard. To save weight, the handle is made out of smooth white plastic. A highly utilitarian blade, the back of the machete has a saw on it: this was, in fact, intended for use as a survival tool, and in spaceflight, they try to make every tool as useful as possible in order to save weight.
