The AP53 is based on the HK53, a shortened, pistol-caliber-length descendant of the HK33 rifle family, and retains the same roller-lock delayed blowback action rather than the direct impingement or piston systems found on AR-pattern firearms. MKE builds the pistol's receiver from stamped steel and tests it to NATO environmental standards covering salt, fog, humidity, temperature extremes, sand, and dust. The Navy-style lower houses an ambidextrous selector and the standard HK33 trigger group, and the wide handguard is compatible with MP5 furniture and accessories. A Magpul stabilizing brace replaces the retractable stock found on the rifle-length HK53, and the pistol ships with two 30-round HK33-pattern polymer magazines and a 4-prong flash hider.
