Fun Budget Upper
by Mark from Orlando -
Got this on sale for a mutant AR 47 build. Took it to the range and put about 500 rounds through it. This is a FUN BUDGET upper. Nothing fancy or high speed. If that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere. This upper is well built, fit my lower perfectly, shoots fine, and is worth the price. Docked a star for two issues. A few failures to ignite primer or light strikes (may have been the Tul Ammo as Wolf ammo ran flawless) and because the charging handle grove will not take another CH. Must leave the one from factory. Seems like the CH latch notch is a little longer that traditional CH's. Other than that....Good stuff.
Runs good, NO MELONITE BCG-I got a phosphate :(

I was sent a phosphate BCG instead of the listed Melonite BCG. I hope Primary or Radical make it right, b/c that is important to me. Upper arrived well packed, but the person packing this needs to chill out on the oil. It was DRIPPING in oil. Took 30 minutes to clean off handguard and upper. Took to range today. With Tula Poly hollow points and Golden Tiger ball ammo, I was able to ring steel all day at 100 yards once I got my red dot sighted in. Barrel seems accurate enough for what it is. I intend to use this as a range toy and a pig gun.
Handguard seems decent enough. The clamp on screws seem a little iffy, but I think if not overly abused should be ok. The brake definitely helps recoil at the cost of some muzzle blast.
So Radical, Please fix my wrong bcg and tell oil guy to calm down and you have a great Upper combo ;)
barrel/bcg not melonite like advertised
by John -
was initally impressed, but upon closer inspection the barrel/bcg are not melonite. Radical had not informed Primary Arms of the change in specs. Returning. Wanted melonite bcg for sure.
Good upper the just eats cheap ammo.

Finally got the chance to take this upper to the range and was not disappointed. We used several cheap brands of steel cased ammo and never a hiccup. I definitely recommend this to anybody.
WOW JUST WOW!!!

She shoots amazing groups with several at or under an inch, with cheap tula ammo. She did open up when she got hot after several 30 round mags, and have a 3 inch POI once hot. When she cooled down she went back to Original POI. Not one failure of any kind with over 350 rounds down the tube so far. I am highly impressed.

Runs steel case ammo flawlessly, great value and suprisingly accurate
Nice but CHEAP - Caveat Emptor

Haven't had a chance to fire it yet - may change the rating if it really impresses me with its accuracy. Issues - first it arrived drenched in oil - dripping off the parts drenched. Machining overall looks decent but the hand-guard attachment seems a little weak - time will tell. Charging handle is very basic. Bolt carrier group was my problem. Removed it and had to literally pry the cam out of the carrier in order to release the bolt. Couldn't easily fit it back in - v. poorly done - had to spend extensive time filing/sanding/lapping to get things to fit smoothly. Then there was firing pin protrusion - measured at 0.045", should be 0.056 to 0.060 per Soviet/DDR specifications for 7.62x39 ammunition. More work.
Could Be Better . . .

Looked good on receipt - although it was packed in a plastic bag and just soaked in oil. Pulled it out, wiped it off - played with it and it seemed functional. Checked firing pin protrusion and got the "typical" 0.045" of an "extended" length firing pin. Problem is Russian spec for the 7.62x39 calls for 0.055" - 0.060" protrusion. Went to pull the bolt apart to correct this but could not remove the cam. Finally got it apart and, my gods, what a screwed up bolt. Had to do significant metalwork to correct and bring bolt into spec. Would have been easier to just buy a new one. Finally got it fixed and firing pin adjusted - took it to the range and did a functional check. Shoots OK. Not a match grade unit but about what you would expect for the price.
Not very impressed for the amount of cash required.

I would totally skip the "PA exclusive" handguard, because the circular holes are not sharp, but very pointy and uncomfortable in hand. The gas block is quite large underneath the bottom of the barrel and close to the handguard, could not install my Magpul vertical grip in the slot beneath it; the screws and M-nuts ran into the gas block. Fit seems pretty good, and it fired fine. Also, the handguard seems to be finished with phosphate instead of anodizing, every place that my hand rubbed or where it rubbed my sling left whitish marks from the transfer. I guess if you're going for the "battle-worn" look this will be good. The handguard may be OK with gloves, but not everyone wants to hit the range with them as a requirement. If I knew last week what I know now I would have gone with a different complete upper. Fast shipping even in spite of this shutdown, Primary Arms service so far has been great on multiple orders. Hope they'll make this right!
