JHP expanding ammunition is more expensive than non-deforming target ammunition because it’s designed to undergo controlled expansion in soft tissue and, thus, is more expensive to manufacture.

If you carry a .45 ACP handgun loaded with Speer Gold Dot defensive ammunition, Speer Lawman can closely match the point of impact, assuming you’re using bullets of the same weight.

The Speer Lawman .45 ACP 185 Grain Total Metal Jacket (TMJ) consists of a fully enclosed projectile, ensuring that lead from the bullet entering the atmosphere is kept to a minimum. As a result, the Speer Lawman is safer to shoot on an indoor firing range. Using the lighter 185-grain bullet, this load produces a higher muzzle velocity than its 230-grain counterpart: 1,050ft/s, resulting in a muzzle energy of 435 ft-lbf. 185-grain bullets generate less recoil in lightweight, compact defensive handguns.
