Because AR function is hard on the system of the firearm, the buffer pins sometimes need to be replaced as a result of being one of the pieces affected by the cycling system. If receivers are made out of specification from the firearm in use, the buffer can slam into the retaining pin. Eventually, this wears the pins down and will have to be replaced.
