FFL INFO

Abiding by Federal Firearms Licensing laws when shipping ammo, guns, and gun accessories can be a complicated process, even for a seasoned gun broker. Add in NFA regulations and state restrictions and permits, and the task can feel daunting until you’ve done it once or twice. To help streamline that process we’ve put together a small guide to help you.

AMMUNITION SALES

All ammunition is legally required to ship in packages separate from packages containing firearms of any type. Additionally, special labeling is required identifying the contents of the packages as potentially dangerous or hazardous. To ensure your order is delivered as quickly as possible, please:

  • Choose UPS or Fedex as your shipping carrier.
  • Ship only to the continental United States. Sorry Alaska and Hawaii residents, this means we can’t ship ammunition to you.
  • Be old enough to legally buy a whiskey. All ammunition must ship to persons 21 years and older.

FIREARMS

All firearms, including lower receivers, must ship to ‘licensed persons’. A licensed person is anyone holding a Federal Firearms License; there’s a good chance that if you don’t own a gun store you don’t have that license. Thankfully, we’re happy to ship your order to a local dealer where you can retrieve it. Before we can complete the order and ship you your firearm you will need to:

  • Fax or mail a copy of the dealer’s signed FFL license; we’ll only be able to ship to the address listed on the license itself.
  • Select an appropriate carrier
  • USPS will ship a rifle or shotgun to a dealer for you, but they will not ship a handgun. They will also refuse to ship ammunition.
  • Fedex will only ship firearms via their Priority Overnight service and will only ship ammunition via ground that is marked as a hazardous good.
  • UPS will ship rifles and shotguns via ground, but will only ship a handgun via next day air. UPS will also ship ammunition marked as a hazardous good.

MAGAZINES

No gun is complete without a magazine, well except revolvers, and bolt action rifle, pump action shotguns… anyway you get the point. We want to send you a magazine to complete your build, but every state has different rules about what is legal for you to own. Please ensure all orders you place are in compliance with the state to which your order is being shipped. Orders not in compliance with local laws will be cancelled. Please review the list below for an introduction to local magazine size prohibitions:

  • Over 10 Rounds: CA, CT, DC, HI (pistol magazine only), Oak Park IL, MA, MD, NY
  • Over 12 Rounds: Chicago IL
  • Over 15 Rounds: CO, Aurora IL, NJ d.
  • Over 16 Rounds: Franklin Park IL
  • Over 30 Rounds: OH Over 35 Rounds: Riverdale IL

SUPPRESSORS (AKA SILENCERS)

While suppressors don’t actually make your gun silent (thanks for popularizing yet another myth Hollywood), they do make them look even better and certainly increase the pleasure of firing a high powered rifle. Laws around suppressors vary by state, and you must register a suppressor with law enforcement when purchasing. To help you out here’s a list of states that allow private ownership of suppressors: AL, AR, AK, AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MI, MO, MS, MT, ND, NE, NV, NH, NM, NC, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WV, and WY. As always, it is the buyer's responsibility to make sure it is legal to own in your area.

You’ll need to register your suppressor as well. Here’s how:

Register in your own name (requires fingerprints, photos, and a Law Enforcement certificate approved by a Chief Law Enforcement Officer in your area)

Register to a Trust (requires creating a Trust with a legal writer or lawyer)

Register to a Corporation; requires the principle or CEO's approval and corporation to be in good financial standing (consult your local FFL/SOT dealer to determine the best option for you)

Once you’ve done all that, you can purchase a suppressor from Primary Arms. Once you’ve purchased your suppressor from Primary Arms you will get your e-mail confirmation of your order. Please e-mail info@primaryarms.com or call us at 713-344-9600 and arrange for your transfer. (From Primary Arms to your FFL/SOT dealer, the transfer usually takes about 8-10 weeks. Times are dependent on the ATF NFA branch.) We will alert you with a tracking number as soon as your suppressor ships to your local/SOT dealer.

You will complete the required ATF paperwork at your local FFL/SOT dealer once the suppressor arrives there. This is where you will mail in the $200 check for your tax stamp to the ATF NFA branch. You will not be able to take possession of your suppressor until the transfer process has been completed by the ATF. This typically takes between 6-9 months, dependent on the ATF NFA branch.
