The 7" barrel gives this upper better inherent accuracy and higher velocity than Foxtrot Mike's shorter VFM-9 models, and the extended 5.8" M-LOK handguard adds real estate for optics, lights, lasers, and hand stops. That extra handguard length also gives the support hand more room to work, improving ergonomics and control for faster, more accurate follow-up shots. The barrel is cut from 4140 steel rather than the 41V50 steel used in Foxtrot Mike's flagship Mike-9 line, trading some of that match-grade performance for a barrel built to hold up over a long service life at a lower cost.

Cost savings come from eliminating the complex barrel nut in favor of a thermal fit between the barrel and upper, along with a simplified handguard attachment that uses fewer screws than a typical free-float design. Some VFM-9 components are proprietary, though the bolt and muzzle device remain interchangeable, and the entire upper is backed by Foxtrot Mike's lifetime warranty. This upper requires a 9mm-style buffer at least 3.75" long and is not compatible with the MEAN ARMS ENDOMAG or EXOMAG.
