The 300 AAC Blackout cartridge was designed for suppressed shooting at the range when making noise is undesirable. While some 300 BLK ammunition is supersonic and more capable of hunting, this caliber is best used with subsonic projectiles. However, the Hornady 300 blackout ammo utilizes a heavy 190gr Sub-X bullet to keep it from breaking the sound barrier while still providing efficient terminal ballistics. The subsonic expanding bullet is designed to expand at low velocities with its lead core, metal jacket with long grooves, and hollow point flex tip. The soft lead core combined with the long grooves allow the 300 AAC projectile to expand on impact while retaining 90% of its weight. The added benefit of the flex tip technology ensures this subsonic ammunition meets FBI terminal ballistic test requirements within 100 yards with a 16-inch barrel. The FBI terminal ballistics test requires an impact velocity of 1,20 fps into ballistic gelatin with 16-18” of penetration and 90% weight retention.
