The M72 is built around the RPK pattern, using a heavier, longer barrel than a standard AK-47 to handle sustained firing and improve accuracy at extended range. The barrel's ribbed exterior adds surface area for heat dissipation, and like the rest of the receiver, it's built on Zastava's thicker 1.5mm stamped steel with a bulged front trunnion for added rigidity around the barrel and gas block. A bipod, standard to the RPK layout, gives the rifle a stable firing platform for prone or supported shooting.

Traditional wood furniture covers the handguard, pistol grip, and stock, giving the rifle a classic look while standing up to field use. A bolt hold-open feature lets the action lock back on an empty magazine rather than riding forward, and the rifle ships with one 30-round magazine to get started.

Zastava Arms has manufactured Kalashnikov-pattern rifles since the 1960s, and its RPK-pattern rifles carry that same manufacturing heritage into a heavier-barreled platform built for a different role than a standard-length AK.
